Empreintes

A game about the cost of getting around. Drive a car, fly a plane or a helicopter, and watch the CO₂, the fuel and the trees it would take to make up for it add up as you go.

Make an invisible cost impossible to ignore.

Every trip has a cost nobody sees. In Empreintes it stays on screen the whole time. Four counters follow you: total CO₂, fuel burned, the trees needed to absorb it, and the trees dying. Facts about transport emissions show up as you play, and a global counter keeps running at the top.

The real design question was the HUD: how much can you put in front of a player before they stop reading it? I kept the counters small and always in the same corner so they read at a glance, and gave the facts their own panel.

Helicopter · Flying low over the forest, with a fact about aviation fuel on screen.
Plane · Flight mode adds speed, altitude and thrust, while the counters keep climbing.
On foot · Walking the town costs nothing, and the counters stay still.
Car · A short drive through town, fuel and CO₂ counted metre by metre.
